If my business is storing goods in a 3rd party warehouse, does the liability lie with us or them?
It will depend upon the contract that is signed for storage or shipment. There are a couple of ways that cover is provided firstly Marine cargo insurance may have warehouse to warehouse clause based upon a specific bill of lading. A number of shipping agents cover goods especially where goods are delivered on a just in time basis on what is called a “stock throughput” basis where cover is arranged from manufacturer through to the end customer. Warehouses also provide options as trustees of these goods which they will generally charge for. Alternatively the customer can include the stock as an insured location under their own policy.
